Te Reo Māori pronunciation of place names (lead up to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori) – Joan Costello

Wed 6 Sep 2017 @ 7:30 pm

Sure you’ve heard of Aoraki or Tititea. But do you know how to pronounce these words? What about the places closer to our Wellington home – how do you really pronounce Tararua or Aorangi or Atiwhakatu?

In the lead up to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori or Te Reo Māori Language week (11-17 September 2017), Joan will give us a crash course in how to say place names in te reo māori (you might even learn flora and fauna – that’d be plants and animals just in case Greek isn’t your thing).

Joan’s an expert te reo māori teacher who’s approach is all about having fun while learning te reo and tikanga. She uses the stories which have been shared with her over the years to show how words and phrases embody tikanga, spirituality and whakapapa.

Using the names of places we visit, she’ll teach us 6 tips to master pronunciation so we can have greater confidence to pronounce place names, people’s names, plant names and basic phrases.

Be prepared to have fun, laugh and learn.
