Does anyone know of any national mountain running organisations which provide good safety advice, preferably on the web?

I asked about why there’s no mountain running category on the AdventureSmart website, which is being pushed as a central source of safety advice for all outdoor adventures, and which lists the 20 different categories of “Land Adventures”. It was pointed out that AdventureSmart is really just a portal site for other info that’s already out there. (Fair enough.) They weren’t aware of any good organisations or web sources which collate safety advice that’s specifically targeted for New Zealand mountain running.

I think it’d be added very quickly if there was something to link to, but after some searching around I couldn’t find anything more than out-of-date safety tip pages for specific events. Is there even a national organisation that represents mountain runners?

There is no national organisation for mountain running that I’ve ever heard of, and no kind of ‘official’ safety guidance. Individual events just do their own thing in terms of safety, although they obviously take cues from each other. The Ridge Runners facebook group would be worth a look though.

This link will help get you started. Mountain running safety is pretty similar to tramping safety.

      Thanks for the tips.

As far as I can tell the Ridge Runner stuff unfortunately seems to be closed (as in you’d need to be an approved signed-up member to even view most of the content) so I’m unsure if it’s the sort of thing the AdventureSmart people would want to link to.

Oh well, it was just a thought. It just seemed a bit strange in the context of a site that’s pushing itself as the one-stop place for safety info about anything you might do outdoors.
