What’s on WTMC Wednesday Social Nights May – June 2016

Are you a tramping socialite?

We are in need of a new social convener and it could be you! As the social convener you organise the roster of speakers and remind them to show up, pick out the biscuits, and set up biscuits and tea on Wednesday nights. We’re currently working on organising a social crew to help with set up. If you might be interested in the social convener role or social helping crew, or want to nominate a friend, drop me a line at or just say hi at a club night.

We’ve got some brilliant speakers  coming up in the next few months, but we can always use more. Email if you are interested in giving a talk or have a suggested speaker. Sometimes the schedule changes last, so you can always check the club’s website for the latest club night schedule.

27 Apr 2016 – Nick Rabjohns from Wellington Search and Rescue (LandSAR) will be telling us all about search and rescue and how to help out. Follow their facebook page for latest updates. LandSAR Wellington is an organisation of unpaid professionals that provide search and rescue services within the greater Wellington region. These are the guys who find you, when you can’t find your away home – one of the most important voluntary organisations. Come along to show your support and find out how to pitch in, whether with time or koha.

4 May 2016 Matt Conway – Kaimanawas Photography Trip – We have some amazing photographers in the club. Occasionally, a few of our keen members organise a tramp that allows for extra time to take some of the best photographs. This talk will feature the group’s favourite shots and tips for getting them.

11 May 2016 – Social night! Always wish you had more time to talk, sign up for trips and eat extra biscuits? That’s what social nights are all about. Extra biscuits will be available and if we ask the gear custodian and chief guide nicely, they might get out some of our maps and books to have look through.

18 May 2016 – Gear talk with Andrei Zuibkov – Andrei will take us through the essentials of tramping gear. Discussion and gearheads welcome! If you’re new to tramping or even new to the tramping club, it’s an essential talk as you’ll learn what the must-haves are and more importantly what not to take! Afterall, a heavy pack is made of too many small things…

25 May 2016 – Sharon Branford – Humbolt Ranges to Lake Nerine – Two of our members took an adventurous tramp over Christmas taking a creative diversion from the 5 passes trip. Need some inspiration for getting off the beaten path? This is a great place to start!

1 June 2016 – Mike Phethean – Christmas Peak Bagging – We had epic Christmas weather and our members hit the hills everywhere – so the Christmas talks keep coming. Two of our members took 10 days and bagged as many peaks as they could going back-to-back around the South Island, only stopping for a burger and beer to refuel.

8 June 2016 – Holger Fiedler – Between Fire and Ice – Laugevegur, Fimmvörðuháls and Jökulsárgljúfur – Holger will take us on a photorgraphic extravaganza through Iceland.

15 June 2016 – Roger Smith – the Curator of the Unfolding the Map Exhibition, will be talking with us about the exhibition which highlights the map resources held by New Zealand libraries including Polynesian Navigation and Tuki’s Map, Coastal charting, Surveying and the Cadastre, Resources and environment, Recreation and tourism, Topographic mapping, and Digital mapping. The exhibition is being curated by Geographx.
