Fred Beckey is the original American “Dirtbag” climber whose stubborn\, singular quest to conquer peaks meant a solitary life on the road\, where he left a long trail of scorned climbing partners and lost lovers in his wake. The documentary tells the life story of this rebel athlete\, who inspired generations with his monumental first ascents\, eloquent books and the lifestyle he fearlessly pioneered. \nWhere: Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision at 84 Taranaki St\, Te Aro\, Wellington 6011 \nTickets: $14\, Must be purchased online in advance from Eventfinda (no door sales). In 1942\, the Beckey brothers cemented their place in alpine lore when the teenagers survived an incredible second ascent of Mount Waddington––considered the most difficult climb in North America at the time. This success marked the beginning of Fred’s epic tear of first ascents around the world\, during which he became the consummate “Dirtbag” climber: defined as one who forgoes material comforts and defies societal norms in pursuit of a nomadic mountaineering lifestyle. \nThroughout the 20th Century\, Fred shattered records with an unparalleled string of superhuman first ascents\, bushwhacking trails and pioneering direct routes thought previously impassable. He eschewed fame\, sponsors\, family life and the politics of the industry so his only obligation would remain conquering the next summit. Fred continued climbing until he passed away on October 30\, 2017 at the age of 94. \nThroughout his exceptional life\, Fred kept meticulous personal journals where he mused on everything from arcane geology\, to his wild road adventures and many romantic dalliances\, to the myriad sunrises he witnessed from vantages not seen by man before. An environmentalist before there was such a word\, Fred used these journals as the basis for 13 essential books. \nAnimations of Fred’s personal journals\, guidebooks and photographs combine with aerial photography\, motion graphics and rare archival footage to weave together the tapestry of this complex man’s life. DESCRIPTION:Summer is here! And that means more time to explore the great New Zealand outdoors! Want to find out how? \nThe Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club (WTMC) is hosting a new members night and all are welcome. This is a chance to meet our members and find out what the club is all about. \nDoors open at 7pm\, at 7.15pm we’ll give you a quick run down of how the club works\, how to sign up for trips\, the amazing places we go and how to get involved. Afterwards\, there will be time for tea and coffee\, and lots of keen members who can answer all your questions. \nWe love tramping and are always looking for new people to join our community. We organise more than 200 trips a year that include tramping and alpine\, as well as kayaking\, mountain biking\, rock climbing and more. We also organise volunteer projects\, support our members to develop their outdoor skills and offer plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with our community – whether it’s organising trips and social events\, educating other members\, participating in volunteer conservation projects\, entering our photo competition and much more. \nAt our new members night\, you can meet members\, ask questions about how we organise our trips and find out what trips you might want to go on. Not to mention there will be plenty of biscuits and cake! \nWhether you’re a seasoned tramper\, new to tramping or even just curious about tramping – come along.

DESCRIPTION:Paula from Friends of Baring Head will talk about the work they’ve done to look after Baring Head. \nBaring Head is a spectacular 284 hectare headland and river valley on the coast south of Wainuiomata\, between Palliser Bay and Wellington Harbour. It’s a scenic reserve\, managed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) as part of the East Harbour Regional Park. \nFriends of Baring Head supports GWRC in its stewardship of the area and the protection\, maintenance and restoration of Baring Head. \nThey have an ongoing biodiversity programme\, including planting\, plant care\, and weed control.
