This was a reduction of 95 per cent from my 2017 carbon footprint from travel. It felt good.” \nWhat happens when a leading New Zealand scientist (and frequent traveller) rules out flying for a year? From overnight buses to epic train journeys\, Shaun Hendy’s experiences speak to our desire to do something – anything – in the face of growing climate anxiety. \n#NoFly confronts the hard questions of one person’s attempt ‘to adapt’. DESCRIPTION:Covid-19 cannot stop the WTMC Photo Competition! It will be going ahead ONLINE via Google Hangouts at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2 September 2020. This means you can get yourself a cup of tea\, sit back\, and enjoy club members’ best photos beamed into your living room! \nThe judge this year will be Grant Newton again who in the past has offered valuable critical comment on every photo submitted so it is a great way to learn what makes a good photo and how yours could be improved. \nThe best photos will kindly be collated and submitted to the FMC Photo Competition by Tony G. SUMMARY:WTMC Talks: Christmas wanderings in the Canterbury High Country
DESCRIPTION:The Canterbury High Country is a spectacular and little known region of rolling tussock ranges\, rugged mountains\, steep scree slopes\, huge braided river valleys\, towering snowy peaks\, hidden lakes\, and historic old musterers’ huts. Most of this area was formerly made up of high country sheep stations\, but much of it now forms part of the new Te Kahui Kaupeka and Hakatere Conservation Parks. Richard (and possibly Harry) will talk about their Christmas trip in this region with Kevin Cole\, Matthew Conway\, and Tony Stephens.

One way of doing this is making it easy for our members to recycle responsibly. That is why we are organizing a battery amnesty where you can bring along your old dead batteries to club night and we will pay for them to be recycled responsibly for you – what a deal! \nWhat does it mean to recycle responsibly? We will be taking the batteries to the Wellington Sustainability Trust\, who charge $5 a kilo for recycling batteries (they also offer a lot of other e-waste recycling services). They send the e-waste to IT Recycla who look to reuse as much of it as they can. \nWe know you have a stash of old batteries\, from your head torch or your GPS device\, rolling around in the top drawer. Bring them along to club on 17 or 24 September\, hand them over to the door monitor\, and remove a little bit of environmental guilt from your life!

SUMMARY:Forest & Bird Wellington: We “Give Nature a Voice” — OK\, so what do we actually do?
DESCRIPTION:Most people in New Zealand have heard of Forest & Bird\, but few are aware of the range of activities its members get involved with. With the largest number of members of any environmental group in New Zealand\, the members of its 45+branches undertake a wide range of conservation projects\, as well as writing submissions\, letters and emails to local authorities and using social media in an attempt to “Give Nature a Voice”. \nKen New has been a member for 40 years and for the last 10 years he’s been part of the Wellington Branch committee\, most recently as Secretary. He was also Chairperson of the Southern Environmental Association for several years. His love for the environment has taken him tramping in the UK\, most states of Australia and on several of the Great Walks of New Zealand. Ken will give an illustrated talk about the various Forest & Bird projects currently under way in the Wellington region and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Forest & Birdand its activities\, locally or nationally.
