SUMMARY:Forest & Bird Wellington: We “Give Nature a Voice” — OK\, so what do we actually do?
DESCRIPTION:Most people in New Zealand have heard of Forest & Bird\, but few are aware of the range of activities its members get involved with. With the largest number of members of any environmental group in New Zealand\, the members of its 45+branches undertake a wide range of conservation projects\, as well as writing submissions\, letters and emails to local authorities and using social media in an attempt to “Give Nature a Voice”. \nKen New has been a member for 40 years and for the last 10 years he’s been part of the Wellington Branch committee\, most recently as Secretary. He was also Chairperson of the Southern Environmental Association for several years. His love for the environment has taken him tramping in the UK\, most states of Australia and on several of the Great Walks of New Zealand. Ken will give an illustrated talk about the various Forest & Bird projects currently under way in the Wellington region and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Forest & Birdand its activities\, locally or nationally.

DESCRIPTION:In January Sarah travelled to the Subantarctic Islands with Heritage Expeditions as a recipient of their True Young Explorer Scholarship Programme. \nThe Subantarctic Islands are one of three World Heritage Areas New Zealand has\, yet many people do not know about their existence. \nSarah will talk about her time on the 13 day expedition exploring such a unique place\, how it provided an insight into life without predators and why we all must fight to protect the Subantarctic Islands for the animals and plants that call it home. She will also talk about what life was like on board the Spirit of Enderby.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Harry Smith\n\n\n\n\n\nI am going to talk about two little-known huts that I visited with Kevin Cole on our way back to Wellington at the end of our Christmas trip in the Canterbury High Country in 2018. The club has occasionally run Mystery Trips where the participants don’t know in advance where they are going; in that spirit\, this is going to be a Mystery Talk and I am not going to reveal the names and locations of the huts\, even during the talk! All I can say is that they are:\n  – located somewhere in the upper half of the South Island\n  – great places to go to but seldom visited\n  – easily accessible in a day on tracks\n  – in stunning locations with superb views\nCome along and see if you can figure out where they are!
