SUMMARY:WTMC Talks: A wander through our backcountry history
DESCRIPTION:Hazel Phillips will talk about her recently published book Solo: Backcountry adventuring in Aotearoa New Zealand.\nCheck out the book from @masseyuniversitypress here: https://www.masseypress.ac.nz/books/all/solo\nFrom the book jacket:\nOne afternoon in Auckland\, journalist Hazel Phillips decided to close her laptop and head for the hills. She then spent the next three years living in mountain huts and tramping alone for days at a time\, all the while holding down a full-time job.\nAs she ranged from Arthur’s Pass and the Kaimanawa Forest Park to the Ruahine Range and Fiordland\, she had her share of danger and loneliness\, but she also grew in confidence and backcountry knowledge. Her story of this solo life is an absorbing blend of adventure and humour\, combined with her research into tales from the past of ambition and death in the mountains. She also casts a feminist eye over the challenges women climbers and explorers faced.\nFull of pluck\, courage and resourcefulness\, this book is for all those who long to wade through emerald rivers and breathe the mountain air.\n*WTMC social nights are open to WTMC Club members and the general public. You don’t need to book or RSVP\, just turn up! It’s also a great time to come along and ask questions about getting involved with the club.\nDoors open at 7pm. From 7 – 7:30pm you can sign up for trips\, pickup and return gear from club trips and grab a cup of tea and a biscuit. From 7:30 there are always a few announcements and then we get to the main presenter of the night.
