We are a German Cultural Institution, the Goethe-Institut, hosting a German Film Festival in Wellington from 5 – 27 April 2011. We are focusing on the exceptional films of German documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog.

One of these is “Dark Glow of the Mountains”, a voyage into the Himalayas with the legendary free-style mountaineer Reinhold Messner (more infos below).

The Dark Glow of the Mountains

      Germany 1984, colour, 45 min

A voyage into the Himalayas with the great mountain climber Reinhold Messner, with fellow climber Hans Kammerlander, decides to climb two eight-thousanders consecutively – Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. What makes this undertaking all the more extraordinary is the fact that the two climbers set off on their expedition without oxygen tanks, taking only their backpacks. During the preparations for the climb, Herzog speaks to Messner about his past expeditions.
