Need a break from meeting the same friends every evening? Bored with Netflix? Then why not pack four peanut butter sandwiches, a litre of water and a parka, and after an early evening meal head off to the Catchpool to arrive just before the gates close at 8pm.

From here to the summit of Mt Matthews is a pleasant easy enough walk and the views on the way are pretty cool. There are lots of moreporks calling, and early in the morning there are bellbirds in the valley. And you can make the summit and then get down and home again in time for breakfast. Just pick a night with no clouds and not too much wind.

Here are a couple of pics of what appears in the beam of your headtorch on the way to the top.

Guess you were working at the time – I could see the lights on in the ED.
