Grant NewtonGuest
Hi all,
A note below from the Wellington City Council regarding the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Hillary & Norgay conquering Everest.
Cheers
GrantFor those of us who may never get to climb Mt Everest, Wellington city is providing the next best thing. To mark the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of the world?s highest mountain, Wellington City Council and the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust will be holding Summit Day.
Civic Square on Thursday 29 May between 11am and 1pm.
People will be able to learn more about the 1953 ascent from actors posing as the expedition?s logistics manager, a newspaper salesman, a spokesman for the British Everest Expedition and the young Edmund Hillary himself. Listen to the original broadcast from Sir Keith Holyoake announcing Hillary?s achievement and welcomes from Dame Catherine Tizard, Chair of the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust, and Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast.
?In return for a donation, participants will receive a map. If they complete the challenges on the map and return it to our Sir Edmund Hillary character, they?ll be in to win spot prizes.?
The wet weather venue will be Capital E, with venue change announcements on Newstalk ZB and Classic Hits.
