      This may be of interest to some: https://www.facebook.com/OutdoorTrainingNZ/posts/948118675234169

      Note that Outdoor Training New Zealand (OTNZ) is a new organisation which is attempting to take over where the Mountain Safety Council has recently chosen to withdraw itself from most outdoor training. OTNZ has inherited many of the MSC’s former instructors, and you can learn more from the website at http://www.outdoortraining.nz/ . I’m just passing on this notice out of general interest, and am not affiliated with OTNZ.

      ========

      Wellington OTNZ is running a river safety course
      6th December, 8:30am – 4pm, Belmont Memorial Hall, Belmont Domain, off Kennedy Good Bridge (adjacent to Belmont Primary School)

      River Safety for Hikers, climbers, and hunters.

      Rivers have traditionally been the second biggest killer of New Zealanders in the back country.

      This day-long course starts with understanding river dynamics and hazards. How to evaluate sites for safe crossing. Methods of crossing. Preparing clothing and equipment for a crossing. Managing a group crossing. Pack floating and how to self-rescue if swept away.

      The first half of the course is theory and “dry” practice drills. After lunch (BYO) the course moves onto the river bed for progressively “wetter” putting the morning’s learning into practice.

      Participants should dress as they would when travelling in the outdoors. (Some may want to wear a wet suit underneath during the afternoon). They should bring their pack loaded to the weight they normally carry in the field. A towel and set of dry clothes to change into afterward is recommended.

      Cost $50
