Annual Families Cookout

Every year since 2016, the Families Group has spent a day at Battle Hill, cooking lunch on a fire, enjoying the jumbo swing, feeding eels, sometimes swimming in the stream, and generally having a wonderful time.

Bonfire

This year we had a turnout not seen in several years, with nearly 30 people arriving to cook over a single fire – including the youngest attendee at a families group event in quite a while – Fiona’s gorgeous wee 6 month old.

The food ranged from amazing to vaguely edible, and included huge burger patties, sausages, lots of damper and toasted marshmallows, chocolate brownie and baked apples. No-one went home hungry (including the eels).

The kids enjoyed themselves, at least one family wandered off to find the Kiwi Guardians post hidden in the bush nearby, and we all went home reeking of wood smoke after a lovely day.

It was lovely to see new members of the families group AND new members of the club at our event, it bodes well for our future activities. And of course, the familiar faces helped to keep things running smoothly.

Personally, I learned that I *really* want a cast iron casserole dish in preparation for next year. Those enchilada looked INCREDIBLE.
