As the title says, really… If you go on to the Doc website about Great Walks, it says a sizeable section of the Lake Waikaremoana track is impassable and must be done by boat.

I just get an answering machine when I ring. Does anyone have any knowledge as to when this might be fixed, please?

Hi Margaret. Thanks for your enquiry.

While we are aware the impassable section exists and that it might take quite a bit of work to address, we unfortunately don’t know what is planned nor the timing. Our best advice is that you contact the Te Urewera Visitor Centre on +64 (0)6 837-3803 or teureweravc@doc.govt.nz

We hope you find out more and have a great trip if you go on to walk it. In the meantime, if you have not already, you may enjoy reading our most recent Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk trip report from a WTMC club trip at Queen’s Birthday earlier this year. Enter “Lake Waikaremoana” in our websites’ search function and it should appear.

Given the interest in this subject, sharing a recent (12 Feb 2019) article via the link below on the closed section of this great walk.
