More people visit Tongariro in summer than in winter.

Summer visitors use the many opportunities offered by the Dual World Heritage National Park, for easy family walks to longer multi-day tramps, sightseeing via the gondola, enjoying a meal at the Pātaka Café high on the mountain, photography, rock climbing and other outdoor activities.

The Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club (WTMC) has a lodge at the Whakapapa Skifield that will be open for accommodation to both club members and non-members during 29 December 2024 and 12 January 2025.

During this time there will be a full-time host to ensure everything runs smoothly.

You can stay as short or long as you choose.

The lodge is 5 minutes walk up an inclined path from the carpark.

Costs are:

Adult club member – $25 per night

Youth club member (under 18) – $15

Infant (under 4) – $5

Adult non-member – $35

Youth non-member $25

Child $5.

Pay the accommodation fee directly to the WTMC bank account on arrival.

Accommodation is well appointed ‘backpacker style’ which means that you need to bring a sleeping bag or blankets, and your own food.

For any additional information you may need, including the lodge location within Iwikau Village and photos of the lodge interior visit the Lodge Webpage.

So whether you are just passing by and need a night’s accommodation in dramatic surroundings, or you want to make a holiday on the mountain during 29 Dec to 12 Jan then keep the WTMC Ruapehu Lodge in mind.
