I know about Bearing Head, and Titiha Bay, but does anyone know of some other secret (even if very small) climbing areas around wellington. Maybe a cliff in a forest, maybe just a boulder- somewhere where one can pass an hour or two in the evenings…

There are a few rock outcrops at various places around the coast – e.g. at Breaker Bay, and south of Pukerua Bay. There are some rock outcrops up on Mt Kaukau, and also a couple of very small ones on the flank of Tinakori Hill. There’s an old quarry on the side of Mt Victoria up above the Mt Victoria Tunnel that people sometimes use for abseil practice, although it wouldn’t be any good for climbing. There’s also an artificial rock wall on the side of the motorway in the Bolton Street Cemetery that people sometimes climb on.
There is (or at any rate used to be) a guidebook called Wellington Rock describing what’s available – check the library or tramping shops.

I have a copy of the climbing guide, which I guess can scan and email (I assume that’s acceptable now it is apperently not for sale anymore). But I’m in Akl this week, so will be next week the earliest.

The ClimbNZ website has a page listing the various climbing areas around Wellington and the contents of Wellington Rock.
