For nice accommodation on Mt Ruapehu over new year try the WTMC lodge
The Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club (WTMC) lodge at Iwikau Village, Mt Ruapehu, will be open for to the public for accommodation during 29 December 2024 to 12 January 2025.
Four of us went up to Mt Ruapehu last summer and stayed for three nights at the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club (WTMC) lodge at Iwikau Village (Whakapapa Skifield). It is just a short 5-minute walk up an easy track from the carpark to the lodge.
The lodge is wonderful. There are 7 bunkrooms with space for a total of 32 guests, a large dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious and comfortable lounge with a full-height window that looks out to Mt Taranaki.
There are nice washrooms (with plenty of hot water for showers), and a drying room for wet clothing. There is even free WiFi.
We had a great time there—walks to Tama Lakes and Taranaki Falls, a ride in the Sky Waka gondola to the Pātaka Café for lunch followed by a walk up to the snow for some bum-sliding which was fun. And then some stunning out-of-this-world sunsets from the lodge deck.
So, if you are passing by Mt Ruapehu and want somewhere to stay, or better yet planning on going there for a few days, check out the Ruapehu lodge webpage to see if accommodation is available. We were super satisfied with staying there, and looking forward to another trip there very soon.

Summer Lodge Well, we had a decent snowfall on Sunday morning and a walk in the sun in the afternoon.
Monday was good for a walk to Whakapapaiti hut for lunch although a cold wind in places.
Tuesday was a fantastic calm day in the sun and good for a walk up the mountain.
All is set in place for the rest of the week.
The only thing missing is YOU!
If YOU are interested in staying just turn up but it would pay to check with Brian on 0272468621.
We will be departing Sunday 12th January and that will end WT&MC summer lodge for 2025 until the end of the year.

Summer Lodge
Ngā mihi nui to Brian and Jan for hosting the second week of Summer Lodge.
It was good to catch-up in the evenings.
I’ll be back next year.
