Hi

I am leading a trip along the Nydia Walkway this weekend and am trying to work out the best place to camp on Friday night. Has anyone done this track before? I would like to know whether the Kaumia Bay end or the Tennyson Inlet end would be better.

I have spoken to DOC who have recommended camping in Havelock and taking a water taxi over to Kaumia Bay in the morning but it all gets very costly.

I can’t remember which end is which but if heading to either end of the track on the Friday night you will have a longish night – my guess is start at the Northern end as there are some DoC campsites (or unofficial spots) very nearby the start of the track and it avoids having to use boat travel. The Southern end does not have any facilities from memory ending thru farmland at the roadend, but there might be some fly camp spots a wee way of a walk in – I only passed thru on a bike so wasn’t checking for these things at the time.
