Take a look at volcanoes and their surrounding environments in a way you never imagined. From Maori mythology to Mount Erebus, this weekend will change the way you look at volcanoes.

Presented by Dr. Brent Alloway (Chief Volcanologist IGNS) and Calum Revfem (Environmental Management Analyst RDC), the 2-day excursion takes a unique educational perspective encompassing the geological formation and history of the Tongariro plateau through to the ecological, cultural and economic implications of being located in an active volcanic zone. A full day field trip discovering the Tongariro volcanic plateau is complemented by entertaining and social evening lectures. Brent will be presenting material on the recent Ruapehu eruptions and other unreported volcanic events of significance. His slides from recent volcanology projects in South America, Antarctica, The Pacific Islands and Indonesia promise to give a truly global perspective.

Along with the great accommodation and gourmet food at Skilife lodge in Ohakune, Calum takes a look at adventures and eco-tourism in unique volcanic landscapes from Rotorua and Tongariro through to the Arctic and Antarctic. You will be challenged, educated and inspired, not to mention entertained in a highly social and interactive learning environment.

Dr. Brent Alloway
Brent is a specialist in volcanic deposits and associated hazards and is a regular contributor to earth science education outreach activities. After finishing his PhD at Massey University he worked as a teacher-researcher in the geology department of the University of Toronto. While at Toronto, he studied volcanic stratigraphies in Idaho, Yukon Territory, and Costa Rica. Brent has also studied the seafloor sediments of McMurdo Sound and has helped with the geological mapping of the Transantarctic Mountains.

As a post-doctoral researcher at Lincoln University in 1992, he evaluated the soils of North Canterbury for wine-growing, and as a senior lecturer in environmental geology at Auckland University, Brent won acclaim for his work on volcanic hazards in the Wanganui and Taranaki regions. He supervises numerous post-graduate students including students from Sumatra and Java who are working to unravel the eruptive histories of Maninjau Caldera in Sumatra, and the Merapi Volcano in Java.

Calum Revfem
Calum Revfem is an environmental management analyst engaged in producing Rotorua?s first State of the Environment report. He graduated from Wageningen UR in the Netherlands with a M.Sc in environmental systems analysis, which included research work with Environment Canada?s Pacific-Yukon region water quality division. As part of Canterbury University?s Antarctic Studies programme he researched the environmental impacts of tourism in the Ross Sea Region, Antarctica ? having also worked and traveled in Norway and the Arctic islands of Svalbard. He was a contributing author for New Zealand?s first comprehensive groundwater resource publication and his focus of interest now lies in the development of environmental change indicators.
