The WCC has issued a Draft South Coast Management Plan. If you’re interested in this area (Red Rocks and old quarry site) from a walking, bike riding or environmental point of view then be sure to have a read of it and make a submission.
One of the key issues is road access. Cr Mary Varnham point out the following:
“The relevant section on road access on page 29.
In essence, it:
1) acknowledges that ‘vehicle use of the coastal road presents a potential danger to pedestrians and can damage coastal eco-systems’;
2) proposes the road not be formally maintained and ‘Access will therefore be limited to those drivers with suitable vehicles and a level of competence that suits these conditions’;
3) notes that user groups are willing to undertake repairs to the road and it will be important that any repair work is undertaken in a sensitive
manner’.In other words, the plan would allow 4WDs and trail bikes etc to keep using the road and even repair it!
To my mind this is tantamount to closing the road to pedestrians and
cyclists because these vehicles make it unsafe for such users, not to
mention the damage they cause to the environment.4WDers have been lobbying Council furiously on this issue while the
opposition has been almost invisible. I hope you can generate lots of
submissions before closing date on July 6. Details below.”Copies can be obtained by e-mailing .
Submissions deadline Friday, 6 of July.
