The Springs of Tama – a day walk from the WTMC Mt Ruapehu Lodge.
Many thousands of visitors to the Tongariro national Park visit the Tama Lakes every year. But a new feature called the Springs of Tama has appeared on the latest Topo Map of the area. This is a short guide on how to get to them.

Topo map showing the location of ‘The Springs of Tama’
During a recent stay at the truly wonderful WTMC Ruapehu Lodge I noticed that on the latest edition of NZ Topo Maps sheet BH34 – Raurimu there is a feature added named Ngā puna a Tama – The Springs of Tama.
The Tama Lakes (also named Ngā puna a Tama) are explosion craters about 11,000 years old that have filled with water, and are named after Tamatea the high chief of the Takitimu Canoe who explored the area six centuries ago.
Well, everyone walks to these Tama Lakes but my guess is very few people know of the Springs of Tama so we decided to go on a day walk from the lodge and take a look.
Below is a photo – it is somewhat underwhelming and not really a spring but more a small lake – but still worth a visit even if just for the fun of finding the location. With just a map and compass it is an interesting navigation exercise and a new perspective on the peaks of Ruapehu and Ngāuruhoe.
