WTMC is a member of the Tararua Aorangi Remutaka Huts Committee (TARHC).
TARHC looks after maintenance of huts and tracks in the parks listed. The membership is fairly small, about 15 members that are mostly local tramping clubs. WTMC is a member as we have Paua Hut and an agreement with DOC to look after the Mountain House Shelter.
More info on who they are and what they do on their website: https://tarhc.org.nz/At the last TARHC meeting in May, changes were made to the rules and constitution of TARHC to make the organisation more agile, a positive change. TARHC is really active and receives funding to undertake maintenance activities, activities are currently mostly driven by a core of very passionate individuals. For example you will see on their website they have recently completed maintenance of the Arete Sidle track.
With the right level of involvement there could be opportunities for WTMC to better support TARHC activities and involve club members to contribute to maintenance activities in the Wellington region.WTMC is looking for a volunteer to be nominated on the TARHC committee and represent WTMC.
Nominations are due by Thursday 20 September. The TARHC AGM will take place on 10 October (in person at the DOC office in Porirua, or online). The TARHC committee meets about 2-3 times a year, online. Committee members are also on a distribution to be kept up to date of maintenance activities and progress. The time commitment is a small or as big as you will make it. You could choose to be kept in the loop or play a more active role to help and influence decision making and priorities. If you are interested or would like to discuss, please email by Tuesday 18 September.
If there is no interest WTMC will ask to be a TARHC member, but not a committee member. Thanks
