DOC was recently approached by a group of community representatives, who are keen to see mountain biking options in the Tararua Forest Park.
There are currently very limited opportunities for recreational mountain bikers to enjoy the Tararuas, unlike most other DOC managed areas throughout the country.
DOC has proposed to allow mountain bikers access to the Rimutaka Summit track (Frith / Pylon Track to Bucks Rd) on a trial basis for 12 months in order to assess usage levels and any issues. The trial starts on October 1st.
The public will be informed of the trial through DOC’s website and local mountain biking clubs. They will also highlight the rules and etiquette for dual use tracks.
Research with colleagues throughout the country who are responsible for other dual use tracks including the Heaphy Track and Old Ghost Road, has shown that very few if any issues arise between users when tracks are opened to mountain bikers.
WTMC is supporting this proposal, as we believe that mountainbikers should have an opportunity to enjoy parts of the Tararuas. We also have a number of mountainbikers in our club, so we hope this provides a good opportunity to explore some new trails!
DOC is running some working bees to clean up overgrown sections of the track – get in touch with Adam Riding at DOC if you are keen to participate.
