WTMC Talks: Skiing to the South Pole, Following Amundsen’s route up the Axel Heiberg Glacier

WTMC member Bob Maxwell will talk about his ski expedition to the South Pole in a team of four. Bob skied for 35 days, a total of 650km up the Axel Heiberg glacier following Roald Amundsen’s route to the South Pole. He has previously skied from the Ronne Ice Shelf skiing for 40 days and a total of 915km to the South pole.
Bob worked in the outdoor education industry for the majority of his working career, including 10 years at Outward Bound. In 2018 he was the 25th New Zealander to climb the North face of Mount Everest during his completion of the seven summits, climbing the highest mountain on every continent. Bob was involved in five expeditions in Antarctica as well as completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies at Canterbury University. Bob also has a Doctorate focused on motivating unemployed youth, using outdoor education.
*WTMC social nights are open to WTMC Club members and the general public. You don’t need to book or RSVP, just turn up! It’s also a great time to come along and ask questions about getting involved with the club.
Doors open at 7pm. From 7 – 7:30pm you can pickup and return gear for club trips and grab a cup of tea and a biscuit. From 7:30 there are always a few announcements and then we get to the main presenter of the night.
