Nature of Things – Feb 2014

Time for the second reminder or notice that the WTMC AGM is coming up. Hopefully you have Wednesday April 9, 7.30pm for an 8pm start marked in your diary. The venue is our usual meeting place in Moncrieff Street, Mt Victoria. The Annual Report will be circulated ahead of the meeting. I had hoped to get it out at the same time as this newsletter but the audit of the financial statement and the final editing still needs to be done. The agenda for the session remains unchanged:

  1. Apologies
  2. Minutes from 2012 AGM
  3. Presentation of annual report and financial statement
  4. Election of officers
  5. General business

As I mentioned in the February newsletter if you have any agenda items please forward them to the secretary. At this stage we have no life membership nominations to consider, hence no agenda item covering this.

The list of nominations for committee positions has changed slightly since February so the list is as follows:

  • President, Amanda Wells
  • Vice President, Tony Gazley
  • Secretary, Rebecca Day
  • Treasurer, Brendan Eckert
  • Membership, Jo Fink
  • Transport, Richard Lardner
  • Chief Guide, Mike Phethean
  • Assistant Chief Guide, Debbie Buck
  • Lodge Convenor, Brian Goodwin
  • Social Convenor, Sue Walsh
  • Communications, vacant
  • Promotions, Mike Gilbert
  • General Committee, Megan Sety

Off committee roles:

  • Newsletter editor, Megan Sety
  • Journal editor, Ian Harrison
  • Gear Custodian, Pete Silverwood

If you are interested in being nominated for a role please contact myself or another committee member.

Excluding myself six people will be standing down from the committee at the AGM. Craig McGregor, Donna Maher, David Heffernan, Pete Gent, Helen Law and Steve Austin. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their contribution to the smooth running of the club and wish them well with whatever they choose to use their spare time to do going forward.

A few weeks ago we held a New Members night organized by David Heffernan. The evening was a great success with a good attendance made up of both prospective members and existing members. Thanks to everyone who helped out on the night and in the days and weeks leading up to the event. I know a lot of people spread the word that the event was coming up and this really helps to boost attendance. Each and every one of us can help to keep the club growing by talking to potential members about us and what we have to offer.

With summer tramping in full swing Mike P is now looking for ideas for the next trip schedule. If you have any ideas and/or would like to be on the email list to get notices about trip planning and trip leadership send an email to Mike P or talk to him or Debbie on a Wednesday night. It is always great to get some new ideas or just feedback on trips you have liked or not liked and why. Last year we had 16 new trip leaders helping out. It would be great to get a similar number of new trip leaders this year.

Bushcraft is coming up later this month. This is a great course to do if you are relatively new to tramping or tramping in New Zealand. If you are interested in this course or can’t do the March course but would like to do a course in the future send an email to Amanda. I’m looking forward to reading about the course in the next newsletter.

That is it from me. This column is uncharacteristically brief because you can read more from me in the Annual Report when it comes out. Other commitments have largely kept me away from the clubrooms so far this year but I will be back next week. I’m looking forward to catching up with some of you in person then. There will be shortbread! See ya then and stay safe in the hills.
