Ruapehu Lodge Report – Jan 2014

Summer at Mt Ruapehu is almost as exciting as winter. Whether it’s exploring Tongariro National Park, finding a central, comfortable, away-from-it-all place to relax, or as a central stopping off point to break your road trip, our lodge is a great place to call home.

Over Christmas/New Years we ran an ‘Open Lodge’ – if you missed it, the lodge was open from 31 December to 12 January for you to turn up with no bookings, no hassle, and pay cash for the nights you wanted to stay. We had 30 people take advantage of this, and many say they’d make plans to drop in in 2014/2015, so we’ll definitely do it again next year.

If you’re looking for a Tongariro adventure or just somewhere to chill out this summer, contact Eric at to sort out a weekend stay.

Maarten is taking a club van to Ruapehu over Waitangi Weekend (4-5 February) – he’s got a smorgasbord of daytrips sorted out but he’s more than happy for you to come up (in the club van or in your car) and do your own thing if you prefer.  Give him a yell on 021 230 4113 or to get your name down.

We will be running other lodge trips, often with transport provided, over the next month or two – watch the club forum to get onto one.

Our Lodge team is hard at work prepping the lodge for the winter season.  There was a working party in there late last year getting the place shipshape, and another working party is planned for the next few weeks.  Andrew Trembath is getting the food side sorted and is about to head up to stock up the pantry with the year’s supplies of dry foods.  Thanks for all your hard work to provide this facility for our tramping, climbing and riding/skiing pleasure!
