Mt Holdsworth day walk – a hiker’s point of view
A video of a day walk to the summit of Mt Holdsworth in the Tararua Range from a hiker’s point of view. Includes walking time for sections of the track. There is even some snow to add to the spectacular view from the peak.
The track up Mt Holdsworth is the easiest way to get to a high peak in the Wellington region. There is the popular Powell Hut just above the bushline that can be used for a two-day trip, but it is quite possible for reasonably fit walkers to get to the summit and back to the carpark in a day.
However, there are a couple of important points to note: first the track climbs nearly 1,200 m so it is not just a walk in the park, and second, the Tararua Range and Holdsworth have a reputation for bad weather—high winds and rain or snow are common at any time of the year so be sure to check the forecast, and take spare warm and rainproof clothing.
With the above in mind the video shows a hiker’s point of view of the track to the summit and the wonderful view when you arrive. It’s well worth the effort.
Notes:
- The video shows a trip to the summit in August 2024 when there was very little snow. Some winters may have a considerable depth and then extra skills, clothing and footwear are required.
- Be aware that when coming down from the summit to Powell Hut with poor visibility it is easy to wander off the track, so take extra care.
- The water in the hut tanks is generally considered ok to drink but you may prefer to sterilize or carry your own.
- If you intend to stay overnight at Powell Hut bookings are required. Go online to DOC. The story of the building of the latest hut is here.
