Tararua Day Trip – Phillips Stream

Canyoning is heaps of fun. Don’t believe me? Well read Megan’s newsletter story of No 1 Canyon. Or take a look at our video of Phillips Stream.

There is a small group within the club that is regularly canyoning – and now summer is here it’s time for lots more trips.

So seven of us headed of to one of the friendliest , and nearest to Wellington, canyons in the Tararuas. We left at a reasonable hour on Saturday morning and drove to Kaitoke Regional Park. Then a short and sharp climb up the 4WD track and along an easy off-track ridge to the east. A short drop and we were at the stream above the gorge.

The next few hours were an enjoyable romp down the stream with numerous pools to be waded or jumped, and a couple of nice waterfalls to rappel. It would be difficult to find a more funner way to enjoy a day in the Tararuas – a mixture of walking, climbing, jumping, swimming, and the bonus of playing in the water for the whole day.

Later that afternoon we had an easy bush bash up to the ridge and after a few navigation hiccups we just had to head back down the road to the cars.

Day trips in the Tararuas don’t come much better.
