If anybody is thinking of going into the hills via the Akatarawa Hill Road (e.g. to Renata), it’s currently closed to all motor vehicles while they replace a couple of the bridges. (This is on the Hutt Valley side, so you can still access the summit by car from the Waikanae end, and cyclists can still get through the whole way.)

Of couse, this makes it a great day bike ride, with absolutely zero traffic for most of the way….
