      Hello.

Can anyone suggest what my options would be for a small, light-weight and preferably cheap GPS tracking device that would periodically record waypoints of routes, and produce an output file in a format like GPX? (Display not necessarily required.) I guess it might need to moderate how frequently it checks to preserve battery power and so on.

I’m looking for something I could stash in a pack, switch on and perhaps forget about for most of the weekend, or at least the rest of the day, to have it record where I’ve been and about what time.

      Thanks for any help.
      Mike.

      Hi Mike,

On a similar sort of thread I’m kinda of interested to see if there is any interest in collecting a set of GPX or like files for the club website?

Please make a post if you think that would be cool.

I have seen some posted on tramper.co.nz and ctc.org.nz http://www.ctc.org.nz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=345&Itemid=46 but nothing that was too local (e.g. tararuas)

      Cheers,
      Shane

Yes I’d certainly contribute if I had GPX files (which I don’t).

Following on from my previous post, I also asked over at tramper.co.nz and apparently what I’m looking for is a GPS Data Logger such as:

http://www.holux.com/JCore/en/products/products_content.jsp?pno=341 (39 grams plus AA battery, then claims to last for 12 hours), or possibly

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&partNumber=GPSCS1 (55 grams plus AA battery, then claims to last for between 10 and 14 hours)… which is available from at least one local camera shop but might need to be connected to a camera and I can’t tell from the specs.

They both seem more expensive than I want to pay right now unless they pop up second-hand, so I might wait for a while.

      Mike.
