In a report released yesterday by MED two rivers in the Tararuas were identified as having a ‘medium to high’ likelihood of gaining hydroelectric schemes within the next 20 years. These are:
23m dam in the Waiohine River upstream of Devil’s Creek
Diversion of the Waingawa where it emerges from its gorge in the TararuasA range of other proposals have been suggested including the Mohaka and a range of SI rivers. Un-assessed proposals include the Te Naihi River (tributary of the Waiatoto) Waiho and Tartare Rivers (Westland National Park) and so on.
The report is at: http://www.med.govt.nz/ers/environment/water-bodies/index.html

So does explain the big Contact spend on advertising at the moment? Softening up the great unwashed for more hydro schemes.

bugger the dams, nuclear power or coal is a much better alternative. You’d have to be a fool not think to think Contact is priming people for more hydro or power price increases. Fortunately the Motu was spared many years ago – take a trip up the river and see what beauty there is today and has always been.
