LINZ are releasing a totally new 1:50000 map series on 23rd September 2009 based on a new datum (NZGD2000) and projection (NZTM). What does this mean to you:

      1. Don’t buy a map till then.

      2. Those little numbers that describe where you are will be different. There is no (or virtually no) overlap in the two series meaning numbers can readily be identified as belonging to the old or new series. Scenario: you are tramping alone and you break your leg and luckily you have a mobile phone and luckily you have reception. You call the police and ask for help. Using your old map you tell them you are at 273690 684234 (totally random numbers). They might well clarify what map you are using but they should be able to tell anyway because those numbers could only relate to the old series. They will be using the new series so will have to convert your location.

      3. If you or the club wants to buy 20+ maps you will get them for $3.50 wholesale price from LINZ! Expect to pay 8 to 9 bucks in the shops.

      4. If you have a GPS configured against the old NZMG (NZ map grid) and you want to relate that to your new map you will be out in the Tasman without a paddle! Things could get messy if you have a mixture of old and new maps. Please check I am correct, but based on principals thats how it should work. Anyway the rule is you need to align your GPS projection/datum with the one on your paper map.
