The new A Cosy New Stop-Over For Tararua Trampers
      16 may 2003

The new Totara Flats hut offers warm and inviting overnight stop – and spectacular river views – to trampers venturing into this popular part of the Tararua Forest Park over winter.

A multi-fuel burner, gas cookers and a drying rack are features of the cosy interior of the $290,000, 26-bunk hut, due for completion at the end of the week. Clad in Coloursteel and fully insulated, the new hut also incorporates extensive decking and outdoor seating. There is clean drinking water, and two long drop toilets nearby. Hut warden accommodation is also provided.

The sunny location – 20 minutes north of the existing hut and near the site of original hut – offers expansive views of the Waiohine River and Totara Creek.

Built by Bruce Lovell Construction of Martinborough and designed by Pynenburg and Collins Architects, the new hut is part of the Department of Conservation?s three year, $4 million programme to replace at least 26 back country huts nationwide – ensuring they are structurally sound and meeting acceptable environmental standards in terms of public toilet facilities.

?It is higher above the Waiohine River and in a safer location than the old hut which was sitting on an old flood plain,? DOC visitor asset manager Mark Townsend said.

Totara Flats hut operates on a ?first in first serve? basis. It is a ?serviced hut? costing $10 per night and $5 for children. (Free for children under11 years). Tickets are available from all outlets that retail hut tickets. ENDS
