      Hi,

Its the season for new gear & does anyone know of any brands that are still made here in New Zealand? I reaslise its a big ask in this modern off shore cheap as chips climate as a quick wander round the ususal suspects in town didnt get very far in local gear.

      thanks

Cactus gear is still made in NZ ….. their day packs are available in Bivouac, but you probably need to make a special request for the larger tramping / climbing packs, or order online. I haven’t used them, but from the brochure they look quite good, and are lighter weight than other brands, yet use heavy duty materials.

On that note if you do see something you like from Cactus but can’t find it on shelves, it’s worth asking at Bivouac, as long as you can be specific about what you want to see, and sizing and so on. A while ago I was wondering about one of their packs and they were perfectly happy to send one up for inspection, as long as it was returned within a week. (I didn’t take them up on it in the end, since Bronwyn loaned me hers which gave me a chance to walk it around a bit.)
