Beween 2330 on Jan 8 and 0030 on Jan 9, a rain monitor in the upper Cropp valley (Hokitika Catchment)at about 1000m ASL recorded 104mm of rain!
This equals the highest previous NZ hourly rainfall total set in a thunderstorm in the Waitaikere ranges near Auckland.
Unlike that thunderstorm, the Cropp recieved a further 250mm in the 5 hours after 0030. The Hokitika river as a consequence rose 2.2 metres in the hour between
