      Hi,

      I knew that free bit in the title would get your attention:-)

      News below from Mike Sheridan on the summer after work rogaining series…

      WTMC teams have traditionally done quite well in (and enjoyed) these events with a mixture of navigation, fitness, strategy, off-track skills and judgments of distance*terrain=time required. Its a great way to hone some of those tramping skills.

      Mike & team do a great job (lots of volunteer effort – no high fees) and deserve plenty of support.

      ======================================================

      Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation for teams
      travelling on foot. The object is to score points by finding checkpoints
      located on the course within a specified time. Checkpoints may be visited
      in any order. Traditionally the sport is very popular with trampers
      looking to test their skills.

      A summer of local rogaining is now ready to add to your calendar.
      Whether you are tramper, runner, orienteer or adventurer or want to get out and
      test your planning and navigation skills and get some exercise then this
      new series is just for you!

      We are bringing you a series of 4 afterwork events – all reasonably close
      to town. For those in need of some tuition we will be running a couple of
      training evenings before the first race.

      The main method of communication will continue to be via the Wellington
      Ridge Runners email list as well as posting on the OHV and RogaineNZ web
      site. If you are not on the email list already send me your details.
      Our objective is to get a few more people out there participating so spread
      the word – get a friend along

      A couple of new twists for this series are:
      * As well as winners of each event, we will also have a series winner
      – where you add up your scores from your best 3 events.

      * Entry will be FREE if you pre-enter. The club that runs the events -Orienteering Hutt Valley, will be underwriting the cost of the series.
      Pre-entry will be by email to Mike Sheridan at mike.sheridan@ xtra.co.nz.
      Pre-entry will be open two weeks prior to each event and closes on the Monday night prior. Entry is still available if you miss this cut off by entering on the night at a cost of $10 per person

      * The popular BBQ afterwards will continue – There will be a charge of $2 for this.

      * The controversial penalty for single entries will apply – If you enter as a single you lose 10% of your points (Rogaining is a team sport – but this is a reasonably safe environment and people may want to test their individual skills – there is no financial penalty for entering as a single)

      * We will be providing two training nights: Firstly covering the tips and techniques of navigation using a topo map and compass, and then a second night on rogaining – how to maximise your score – route planning and execution. Again you will have to pre register for these nights, and its free – registration is open now!

      Other logistics will be the same as before…
      * I will send out an email when registrations open, informing you of
      the start/finish location and asking for entries
      * Registration and maps from 5.30
      * Briefing at 5.55
      * Start at 6pm, Finish at 9pm
      * 10 Penalty points for every minute (or part) you are late
