You might think it gets rough in Wellington sometime, but then how about surviving the antartic winter unplanned and with early 1900’s gear? That is really grim!

The New Zealand Antartic Society is hosting a presentation recreating the original Lantern Slide Lecture of Shackleton’s 1914-17 Antarctic Expedition! Wow! A really staggering story of survival against all odds and a great chance to see something out of history. Details and then blrub below.

      6pm, Monday, February 22, 2010
      Lecture Theatre One
      Rutherford House, Bunny Street,
      Central CBD, Wellington
Gold coin donation (to go to the Antartic Heritage Trust)

Recreating the original Lantern Slide Lecture of Shackleton’s 1914-17 Antarctic Expedition

“For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton” Sir Raymond Priestley

Shackleton’s ship The Endurance, crushed in the Antarctic sea ice. Every dollar donated at the lecture will be matched 1:1 by another generous donor.

A lecture presentation by Geoff Selley (FRGS), the current custodian of a talk which has been handed down in direct succession from Dr Hussey, one of the original expedition members. The talk tells of the ill-fated expedition, of their survival after the loss of their ship and of Shackleton’s epic boat voyage through stormy seas to South Georgia to bring help to his party. It will be accompanied by slides reproduced from the original magiclantern slides taken by Frank Hurley, the expedition photographer. The lecture goes back in an ‘unbroken line’ nearly eighty years and, with the eerie glow of the magic lantern slide show, the listener is transported back to that heroic age of Antarctic
      Exploration.

Donation at the door to help support the work of the Antarctic Heritage Trust
