I am organising a week-long trip down South from Blenheim, in conjunction with the Marlborough Tramping Club. Intending trip date is around – late Nov to early December this year.

The idea is to cater to different levels of fitness and ability with different tramping options. For trampers who want to see something new, big, and different.
      • The hard tramp option – The Upper Rangitata Valley, either heading into the Forbes Stream or St Winifred Steam and over Terra Nova Pass and down the Godley Glacier. Maybe with a side trip up to the Niech Glacier. This option could also be altered depending on conditions to head up the Forbes and down the upper Macaulay, then over into the North Branch and out to the Godley hut, with an excursion up onto the Godley Glacier after that.
      • The less demanding option – tramping into the upper Rangitata valley for day or overnight trips including side streams. This option will also include travelling by car and exploring the upper reaches of the Macaulay and Godley valleys above Lake Tekapo. The huts on both sides could be used as a base for day trips or tents could be used for over-night trips.

The upper Godley valley above lake Tekapo receives only a few visitors each year and this makes it unique and special. Let alone the grand scale of scenery, the immense moraine walls, glacier lakes and glaciers.
The Godley hut is uniquely located with 3-4 glaciers all descending near the Hut. Tramping around this area caters to all abilities from flat valley walking, steam bashing, hills and glaciers. I believe that the Macaulay Hut, which is apparently more like a lodge, is free for all users. The latest Wilderness Mag includes a 3D picture of this area.

Back up bad weather tramping options will be made. Possibilities may include the Huxley/Lake Ohau and surrounding areas where there is good valley access after rain and huts that can be tramped during rainy days.

Confirmed dates of travel will made nearer to the approximate dates of late November – early December.

Options for travelling down south from Blenheim are open and flexible. With other tramps, coffees and sightseeing being possible along the way.

      Thanks
