This coming weekend 6-8 March is the Tararua Mountain Race. The route is the Southern Crossing between Kaitoke and Otaki Forks.

The race urgently needs marshals to help record runners as they pass through Alpha and Kime Huts, and would appreciate help at the start and finish lines too. The race runs on Sat (or Sun if poor weather), but Alpha and Kime marshals head out on Fri night.

The race is organised by Lyndsay Fletcher, a long time club member who has put a huge amount into the club over the years – he really deserves our support.

More details are below. If any of you’re free, have the right skills and could possibly help out, please contact Lyndsay directly at

      Andrew.

Marshals for Alpha and Kime Huts
You are to carry in provisions to allow for the postponement of the race to Sunday. You will be required to tramp in to the hut and arrange it so that you arrive at the hut no later than midnight Friday. You will tramp back out the way you went in, once the last runner has passed through.

      Duties include:
      · Check that the runners are generally OK and give assistance where required or when you have concerns for them. Direct them to partake in the refreshments.
      · Record the runner’s arrival times and associated race number.
      · Cross check the time sheets with the ‘Participant list’ sheets.
      · Liaise with the Wellington Land SAR volunteers

You must have the following skills:
      · Knowledge of the food, clothing and equipment needed to tramp the Southern Crossing and to stay over night in either Alpha or Kime Huts.
      · The fitness and skills needed to tramp the Southern Crossing in two days.
      · Experience of tramping during the night for up to six hours and to follow marked tracks.
      · Kime Hut volunteers only
Experience at navigating above the bush line in limited visibility, especially at night.
Experience at travelling above the bush line in extreme weather conditions, especially at night.

You will be supplied with hut tickets (if needed) and vouchers to help cover the cost of food and petrol.
