I will be taking a very easy tubing trip on 14 or 15 January 2012 in Upper Hutt. Perfect intro for first timers or a fun activity for those who just want to enjoy our natural resources. Time in the water is about 1.5 hours and you can get out any time and walk out if you need to.

Now is the time to get yourself a tyre tube – try Beaurepairs on the Hutt Rd for free cast offs. Make sure your tube is big, not a regular car tube. Also required – a buoyancy vest and helmet and paddle or oar. Optional: wetsuit.

There are about 3-4 rapids and only the last one is pretty hairy/exciting. That is the point where a helmet and buoyancy vest might come in handy because they are pretty redundant for the rest of the stretch. You can walk around that rapid if you prefer but it is very exciting.

If there was ever an easily accessible, free mini thrill experience in Wellington’s backyard, this is it. Hopefully the weather and rainfall will allow this trip to go ahead.
