For anyone who’d like to know a bit more about the history of the club …

The Wellington Tramping & Mountaineering Club was formed in 1947 after the amalgamation of two other Wellington tramping clubs – the Outdoor Club and the Ruc Sac Club. Both these clubs were formed in the mid 1930s and were very active until World War II took away a number of their members and the associated petrol rationing limited the activities of those remaining in New Zealand.

After the war, both clubs faced problems, with the Outdoor Club having a reasonable number of members, but no experienced leaders, and the Ruc Sac Club having a depleted membership. The solution was to combine the two clubs, and this occurred in late 1947.

The Club constitution was drawn up on December 11th, 1947, and on 12 October 1948 the Club became an incorporated society.

In 1962, the very depleted Paua Tramping Club merged with the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club on the condition that Paua Hut in the Orongorongo Valley was retained with its original name, kept in good condition, and that the remaining twelve members of the Paua Tramping Club were allowed to use it.
