Hi I have been asked for advice on an Xmas present – can anyone recommend a good brand of gps in the range of $250? he is considering a Garmin. Is a color screen much more benefit than black and white? I haven’t a clue! Thanks!

      Hi Jackie,

Unless it is good enough to contain map information (unlikely @ $250) then a colour screen would be of no benefit IMO.
Make sure that it supports NZ Map Grid so that the GPS readings can be transposed into grid references on the map and vice-versa.

A watch with a barometer & altimeter may make an equally good pressie.

Here’s a link to Dick Smiths site – Garmin for $249 – this is the most popular model in NZ for trampers.
