on next week as part of the documentary film festival:
ASPIRING
In 1949, celebrated cameraman Brian Brake, script-writer
James K Baxter, composer Douglas Lilburn and painter
John Drawbridge travelled the rough rounds around Lake
Wanaka and into the gabled Matukituki Valley to make a
fi lm about a climb around Mt. Aspiring. During the trip
Baxter wrote script notes that turned into his famous poem
?In The Matukituki Valley?. Drawbridge said that for him,
the journey marked ?a point of artistic origin?. The fi lmmakers
were helped on the mountain by famous alpinists
George Lowe, Ed Cotter and Harry Stevenson but the
weather wreaked havoc with the plans.
