You may be aware that DoC is overseeing the construction of the new Kime Hut. At the moment you can still stay in the hut although there is reduced capacity.

From 4 March 2013 until further notice the building site will be closed to the public while the contractors remove the old hut etc. This means if you are heading up that way you need to either camp or stay at Field or Alpha Huts. The Kime toilets are still usable. If you are planning to camp at or near Kime I recommend you check whether water is available – this is the sunny Tararuas after all!

Latest from DoC is that Kime 3 (the new Kime Hut) won’t be open till the end of April 2013.

Latest from DOC Kapiti Visitor Centre is that the new Kime Hut will be open for use “probably before mid-next month”, i.e. before mid-May 2013. Said it depends on building inspectors. They will update the Kime Hut webpage (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/backcountry-huts-by-region/wellington-kapiti/kapiti/kime-hut/) when they have a date.

Another note from DOC as of 22nd April (relayed here by a third party) is: “due to delays in window manufacture and the recent weather the hut will not be ready for members of the public [in the week of 30 April, but that] if the contractors get up there this week the hut should be ready to open in early May.”

Any news? Want to do the crossing this weekend, but with winter weather coming in, the risks are much higher with no Kime Hut….

I phoned DOC about this yesterday and they said the hut would be available in ‘a couple of weeks’. It is still awaiting inspection and certification.

Just phoned with DOC today and they said because of issues with the windows it won’t be open before mid to end of June. :-(

Just got back from Kime with the Mt Hector weekend trip. The hut is pretty well finished, just some inside touch-up jobs to do. It’s not officially open so don’t plan to go there; but perfectly usable if you’re caught out and need shelter.

There is sweet clean water in the tanks so you can use it as a water stop at least!
