Hello,

Can anyone give me a rough idea of that time needed to get from Mitre Flats Hut up to Mitre Peak?

DOC were able to tell me it is about 4 hours from Atiwhakatu to Mitre Flats Hut but could provide any times for going up the hill.

Its all uphill, can’t remember the altitude gain but have a look on your map to work that out. Then use rough guide of 300m per hour as a climbing guide for average fitness with full packs. That builds in time for a few rests a slower walkers with day packs. Depending on agility of party it will be half to 3/4 as long to descend back to the hut.

I did this last weekend – it is a climb of about 1200m, taking about 3 hours up and 2 back down – a good steady plod up, without any nasty steep bits.

I went up there in 2 hrs with a day pack a few weeks back going at a reasonably fast pace, and back down in 1.5 hrs.
