      New Topographic Maps Published

Two new topographic maps have been published to encourage Wellingtonians to take advantage of the walking opportunities that surround them. The maps emphasise the many walking tracks that are maintained by local authorities for public use.
The Wellington Walks map covers all of the Wellington area South of a line between Waikanae and Featherston, while the Tararua Tramps map overlaps the Wellington map through the Akatarawa and Rimutaka Saddles and covers the Tararua Ranges as far North as Mangahao and Putara.
They are clear and bright in appearance, easy to read, and show the essential topographic information without clutter. A realistic landform has been created with 20 metre contours and relief shading to provide a useful geographic context for the rest of the map. The road network is very detailed and yet is clear and easy to follow. Car parks are shown at track entry points.
Both maps are at 1:75 000 scale (one kilometre is 13.3mm on the map) and the sheetlines are skewed to give best coverage of the landmass. The scale and orientation of the maps give users excellent coverage.
Printed on robust, waterproof synthetic paper, and presented folded in a plastic wallet, the maps reflect the highest level of cartographic technology and production standards, resulting in a very high quality product. While not claiming to be “perfect” considerable effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information. Compiled from the latest topographic data from Land Information New Zealand, the maps were updated by extensive consultation with local and regional authorities.
The maps are the first published topographic maps to utilise the recently adopted New Zealand Transverse Mercator projection, are GPS compatible, show a one-kilometre grid and a fifteen-minute geographic graticule.
NewTopo (NZ) Ltd is a new company whose aim is to produce high quality topographic maps for the discerning user. The company continues the standards of cartographic excellence and utility that were previously achieved by the former Department of Survey and Land Information. A retired cartographer, Geoff Aitken of Lower Hutt, has perceived the need for quality cartographic products and, with the assistance of cartographic software from Lorienne in Paris, has been able to develop maps that are uniquely suited to the New Zealand map user’s environment.
Geoff says with a smile? ?Only cartographers can do what cartographers do.?

Hi, I’m extremely interested in purchasing copies of your new walking maps for the Wellington region. Could you tell me please where I can buy them in the Hutt or Wellington.

      Regards
      Lianne

      Hi Lianne
the maps are available at the Map Shop, Vivian St
Both maps are (rrp) $25 each plus $5 if you want the CD too.
The CDs are not availble on their own.
Be Warned: the maps on the CDs take 3-5 minutes to load the 20MB pdf files so do not be disheartened if they don’t pop up immediately.
I would be imterested in some feedback
      Geoff
