Having just completed a wonderful tramp from the Mangakukeke Road end up to Purity Hut, across the Hikurangi Range to the newly renovated Waikamaka Hut (great new burner) and back Waipawa Saddle, Broken Ridge, Ohuinga, along Hikurangi Range to Pourangaki Hut, Kellys Hut and the road end again at Mangakukeke Road end, I sought permission from both farmers for access. The access to Purity Hut is across land that has for the last three years been only due by the goodwill of the farmer, who is weary of people assuming they have a right of access across his land, as this public access agreement ended three years ago. Hence he would really appreciate being asked first (bottles of wine help). Likewise the farmer at Bayfield (also at the Mangakukeke Road end),closes access to Kelly Knight Hut across his property from June 1st to Sept 30th each year. He also wishes to be contacted by phone first. Contact numbers are on the DOC website, right at the bottom of the page about these tracks.

Access via Rangitane road end to Kawhatau Field Base and tracks to Crow Hut and McKinnon Hut does not does not exists anymore since the farm at the road end changed hands.

Please contact Joe Corpe at Mokai Station, Mokai Road end, if you wish to access Iron Bark Hut and Otukota Hut via the Mokai Range and Moki Station. Phone 06 388 0091
