Important notice to visitors
Bridge at Otaki Forks DestroyedThe Waiotauru River Suspension Bridge located at
Otaki Forks road end (grid reference S26 979 347), near the road end picnic site, has been destroyed by flooding.Trampers are advised that there is no access to or exit from the Tararua Ranges at Otaki Forks.
There is no access to or exit from the following:
▪ Fields Track (access and exit for Field Hut, the Southern Crossing and Main Range)
▪ Waitewaewae Track (leading to and from Waitewaewae hut and beyond)
▪ Arcus Loop Track
▪ Penn Creek Hut
▪ Parawai LodgeDo not attempt to cross the Waiotauru River

Thanks for DOC letting us know the bridge is destroyed, but to say theres is no access at this point is overkill.
The Waiotauru can be fwded safely at normal levels by almost anyone – its a popular swimming/paddling spot for family groups. If planning a trip using this entry point, be prepared to sit out bad weather at Parawai Lodge if the river is up – that means carrying a bit of extra food just like you should always do.

I spoke with the DOC Kapiti Dist Office this morning and they are hopeful of having a temporary bridge up here by the end of this week.
