      On Thursday 17 February Wellington Land Search and Rescue is holding an “Induction Course”. This is designed for prospective and new members. However, because this is the first course for a while (of its type) run by WLSAR, there may be room for other WLSAR members to participate too.

      WLSAR intends to hold at least three of these courses each year.

      Venue details:

      Wellington Central Police Station, Victoria St.
      Course starts at 7pm. Assemble in watch house by 6.55pm.
      Duration is expected to be 2 hours.
      Max number of participants = 20

      Priority will be given to prospective members, then the newest members, and so on.

      Course time ? 2 hrs:

      Purpose of Course

      1. To introduce new members to WLSAR?s organization, structure, and operational expectations.
      2. To screen prospective members and identify their particular training needs.

      Course material needed by course participants?:
      1. Pen/pencil/paper.
      2. Your pack with the gear you would take on a search (as per WLSAR equipment page http://wlsar.org.nz/Members/kit.html )

      Course Outline:
      1. How SAR in NZ works ? an overview (ref to website material)
      2. How WLSAR works
      Where we fit in
      WLSAR?s structure
      Who?s who
      3. Organisational stuff ? the database, administrative groupings (squads), call- outs and role of contact person, SAR team creation, list-serves, the website, transport arrangements, opportunities for advancement/specialisation within the organization
      4. Health and Safety issues/requirements/policies
      5. Training requirements/expectations
      6. WLSAR team member grading (backcountry/first response tier, urban/urban fringe tier, prospective, IT support, and ?z? – inadequate training over 24 month period).
      7. Use of course workbook.
