      Snowcraft 2015

Course aim: by the end of the course you will be able to walk comfortably in an alpine environment with and without an ice axe and crampons. You will know how to find out about and interpret weather and avalanche information, how to plan a trip, what is required for managing risk in an alpine environment, how to construct shelters in an alpine environment, how to navigate in an alpine environment, what to eat, drink, wear and think in an alpine environment.

More advanced students will be comfortable baking scones and cakes. The rest of you will gain a deeper appreciation of the taste of a freshly baked scone, probably a cheese one and possibly reacquaint yourselves with the delights of biting into a fresh chocloate cake. All those who complete the course will be ready to sign up for ALP 1 trips.

Course dates: Wed 1 and 7 July 6-7.30pm at the Clubrooms. 10-12 and 24-26 July at the WTMC Lodge on Ruapehu.

Cost: $365 plus gear hire if you need to borrow ice axe, crampons or helmet from the Club

Fitness: to get the most out of the course and to be able to enjoy alpine trips a medium level of fitness is desirable.

If you want to sign up or have any questions there is a trip sheet up at the clubrooms or email

Wednesday sessions for Snowcraft are 1 and 8 July, not 7 July which is a Tuesday.

Course is likely to be oversubscribed so if you are keen get in your membership application and get on the list.
