If anybody’s interested in tramping history, there’s a free lunchtime seminar on the subject tomorrow:

Wilderness magazine’s roving editor Shaun Barnett has teamed up with outdoor author Chris Maclean to present a public history seminar on September 4 based on their soon-to be-release collaboration: Tramping in New Zealand, a history.

“New Zealand offers some of finest tramping anywhere with some of the most striking scenery on the planet, arguably the best hut and track network in the world, a small population, no dangerous wild animals, poisonous snakes or toxic spiders, good access, 14 national parks, 19 forest parks, 10 conservation parks, and no entry fees,” said Barnett. “Around these attributes a uniquely New Zealand culture of tramping has developed, reflecting broader national characteristics.

“In this presentation, we will talk about the history of tramping in New Zealand, and also about the process of researching and writing a book on the subject.”

The seminar is free to attend and is being held at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage at 12.15pm on September 4. The address is: L4, ASB House, 101 The Terrace, Wellington. Those wanting more details should contact .

If you cannot attend the seminar, it can be downloaded from the NZ History website.
